Art Quilts: What's New?

Over the course of our 30 year friendship we often wished we had a forum
where we could share our quilts, and our love of quilts,
with a group of quilt enthusiasts.

"Quilt Adventure" is the realization of that dream.

This time we are going to take a look at the ground-breaking quilts
from the Mel & Hilary Fletcher Collection.

Forty one modern quilts are featured in the exhibition
"Cream of the Cloth: Quilt from the Marbaum Collection,"
showing at at the
San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles

The exhibition runs from Nov. 16, 2010 - Jan. 30, 2011.

These quilts represent an outstanding collection of work from
our era's greatest quilt artists.

We’ll spend a wonderful day studying and enjoying quilts.

As a special treat, we will have a chance to see an exhibition of 20 quilts by
Yvonne Porcella, drawn from all phases of her prolific career.

We are delighted to be joined this time by Jean Ray Laury, one of the
founders of the modern quilt movement.
Jean is a quilt maker and artist who has inspired so many of us with her

original, creative work and unique point of view.

Join us on this Quilt Adventure as we walk through the exhibition
with Jean Ray and Joe, see and hear about some antecedents for this
kind of quilt from Julie, hear some of Jean Ray’s unique
views on the value of process, and get a glimpse into some of the
future directions of quilting from Joe’s long view and current perspective.

JEAN RAY LAURY saw the artistic possibilities of quilt making decades
before most of us, pioneering the way for the rest of us with books

on quilts, shows of quilts in museums and galleries, and innumerable
great works of quilt art. Jean Ray Laury has inspired, instructed and

entertained all who followed her into the realm of quilts of the modern world.

JOE CUNNINGHAM began making quilts professionally in 1979, and has
written widely on quilts for both popular and scholarly publications.
His quilts have been seen in museums and quilt shows throughout the
country. Joe's new book, "Men and the Art of Quiltmaking" is

hot off the press and will be available at the event.

JULIE SILBER has bought and sold antique quilts, appraised

them, written books and articles, lectured and taught,and curated

exhibitions and quilt collections, since 1966. She is the co-author of the

books, "Hearts and Hands" and "AMISH: The Art of the Quilt."

Julie, Curator of the Esprit Quilt Collection, has organized major quilt exhibits including "American Quilts: A Handmade Legacy" at the Oakland Museum and

"AMISH: The Art of the Quilt" at the S. F. de Young Museum.
